    Architecture → Sustainability
I would say all - if not - nearly all architects I know are very aware of [sustainability] . They weave it into their practice. It's a conscious part of the decision-making. It's certainly part of our code of ethics as architect to, to care for society at large. And climate change is a piece of that now. So philosophically, I believe most, if not all architects carry that into the equation and the architects, aren't the only people at the table, but there are also owners and contractors and stakeholders and sometimes taxpayers who are involved in that equation. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/29674-how-fear-of-change-inhibits-our-progress-toward-a-sustainable-future-with-laurie-mcginley

    Storytelling → Sustainability
If I tell you the story about whose lives are better, because we make this. And I let you know how they feel and how that impacts you. That's a story that people want to listen to. And so I think as architects, it's our job to tell a story in a way that daylights everything, not just numbers that lead to return on investment, not just you'll feel better at night because this building is 4% more efficient. That doesn't mean anything to anymore. It's all of the things. And it's telling the story in a way of, I'm not going to tell you doing state story about what happens if we don't do this, but I am going to tell you stories about our beautiful future, where we can keep reading the air and drinking the water and eating food, because we have. And I think that piece is missing sometimes in the presentation of here's your new building. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/29674-how-fear-of-change-inhibits-our-progress-toward-a-sustainable-future-with-laurie-mcginley

    Career → Sustainability
Pick up the tool that feels best in your hand and get to work. And I've said that twice now. I'm not a practicing architect right now. I have my license and I started a company because I realized that there is something that I individually with my unique abilities can do to advance the cause of addressing climate change much faster than I was doing that. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/29674-how-fear-of-change-inhibits-our-progress-toward-a-sustainable-future-with-laurie-mcginley

    Career → Sustainability
I knew I wanted to be an architect when I was in high school. So at seventeen I picked this route. And I think I was really close. That was probably the most accurate choice I could have made at that time about what I thought I wanted to be when I grew up. And at the time sustainability wasn't in the forefront of my mind that was circa 1995. And I grew up in a family that recycled pretty early and were conscious about the energy that we use, but it wasn't a major theme in picking the field. Certainly throughout undergrad, I became aware of it. But it wasn't until I decided to go back, I left the field for a bit and came back and it wasn't until I decided to go back that it was very much in the forefront of my mind. I became a web designer after my undergrad and decided to go back for my master of architecture in order to do something about climate. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/29674-how-fear-of-change-inhibits-our-progress-toward-a-sustainable-future-with-laurie-mcginley

    Business → Sustainability
I think what we've seen over the last 30 years, let's say in the business community is this has moved from what was kind of in the periphery of the organization, maybe in legal compliance, environmental health, and safety to the boardroom. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/28336-sustainability-and-innovation-strategies-to-combate-climate-change-with-michael-lenox-professor-darden-school-of-business

    Empathy → Sustainability
The other essential element is more of a philosophical, ethical component of trying to refocus. How humans interact with the natural world and all the other species, as well as other humans, to be more empathetic and to realize that there is an intrinsic value to all other organisms and that it's not just looking at a tree being like, wow, that's going to make some great pieces of paper. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/27971-biomimicry-for-enhancing-products-and-the-built-environment

    Building → Sustainability
Everybody has a role to play, and everybody must play a role. We have 5.6 million existing buildings, and we need a lot of them to start acting. To address climate crisis in particular. So for us, being able to provide this definition of sustainability that considers all these different aspects and provides an opportunity to evaluate and make better decisions we feel is really super important. https://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/26667-healthy-buildings-for-a-post-pandemic-world

    Vacant lot → Sustainability
But we're in this unique situation where a lot of climate solutions need space and we just happen to have a ton of it. A quarter of Pittsburgh's land is vacant. So particularly in our city, stormwater is one of the biggest climate issues that we're going to be facing in addition to heat island effect. So like greening of land is way up there as far as strategies. And we just happen to have this surplus of vacant land, a third of which is owned by the city. So sustainability and land stewardship and Pittsburgh specific context is so important because we have an opportunity to take one of our biggest issues and solve some of our upcoming bigger problems. But if for any city in general, it's everything has to have space. And so if you have all of this space and you can figure out how to best make it work for your community, resiliency is definitely an outcome of that. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/23828-land-stewardship-for-lasting-community-health-and-change-with-ariam-ford-executive-director-at-grounded-strategies

    Vacant lot → Sustainability
Most of those houses were built in the 1800s and use led paint and lots of other types of contaminants that now also have to be remediated if you wish to, bring that land back into productive use. So there's a physical environmental health issue for all of these vacant lots. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/23828-land-stewardship-for-lasting-community-health-and-change-with-ariam-ford-executive-director-at-grounded-strategies

    Food production → Sustainability
Our program team at Ecotrust on the food side, did this study to understand where the gaps were in getting locally sourced produced, raised meats, produce seafood into the hands of people and our community. And what came out of that study was cold storage, dry storage, kitchen, production, space ,events, community gathering spots. And that is what The Redd is now. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/19070-building-a-sustainable-and-just-food-system-with-emma-sharer-ecotrust-investments

    Energy → Sustainability
And it's something that we're trying to change. And people would be amazed at how inefficient from a technological perspective, our whole grid functions and for people that are in it, it's probably, it's just a daily issue that I deal with. But, the other thing is that our regulatory, because we're so separated from the energy, there's multiple layers, whether you're in a vertically integrated, meaning your utility, owns the generation, the, sometimes transmission and distribution to your house, you don't see. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15228-how-do-organizations-track-utilization-of-renewable-energy

Trillions of dollars are going to be sent over the next few years to create this energy infrastructure. And, just a very small percentage of that. Put in the hands of, creatives around the world, whether they're landscape architects or artists, designers, working with engineers and scientists, just a small percentage put in the hands of those people could really change the entire impact of that infrastructure has. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15084-how-to-make-sustainable-energy-infrastructure-beautiful-with-the-land-art-generator

    Goals → Sustainability
So the benefit of having that target is that all the countries, everyone knows we need to get to half. So what can we do? We can measure what, where we're at right now. We can, we, we have that target of how to get to half, and then we are developing solutions to to reach that. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15382-the-2030-sustainable-development-goals-what-they-are-and-how-to-meet-the-task-with-katherine-camp-p4g-partnerships

    Energy → Sustainability
One area for example, is in energy access. There's a huge gap in the financing that it's going to require to get everyone access to electricity particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. And one of our partnerships is called energize Africa and they are using crowdfunding. To invest in solar companies based in Sub-Saharan Africa and they're on track to get millions of people, access to clean electricity who didn't have access before. That financing gap is one of the obstacles that that can now be measured and tracked. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15382-the-2030-sustainable-development-goals-what-they-are-and-how-to-meet-the-task-with-katherine-camp-p4g-partnerships

    Covid-19 → Sustainability
I think the rates of poverty have gone up and food insecurity. And I think there's just been a lot of challenges in a lot of these goal areas. Yeah, I think across the board, it's been hard for most countries and and individuals. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15382-the-2030-sustainable-development-goals-what-they-are-and-how-to-meet-the-task-with-katherine-camp-p4g-partnerships

    Food → Sustainability
One of them that one of our partnerships works with is sustainable development goal 12, which is about responsible consumption and production. And one of those sub goals is which is to cut the amount of food loss and waste in half by 2030. And that is important for a number of reasons because not only does the food waste include embodied water use and energy use and carbon emissions that then are, for no good purpose. Nope. No good comes out of that. Because it's wasted, but also then the the food creates methane as it decomposes and, it's just. We don't need food waste. Nobody does. So the benefit of having that target is that all the countries, everyone knows we need to get to half. So what can we do? We can measure what, where we're at right now. We can, we, we have that target of how to get to half, and then we are developing solutions to to reach that. http://www.solvecast.com/articles/detail/15382-the-2030-sustainable-development-goals-what-they-are-and-how-to-meet-the-task-with-katherine-camp-p4g-partnerships

    Happiness → Sustainability
So one of the things I argue for instead is a different metric you know we pay attention to what we measure let's measure human happiness and well-being let's measure health things like the genuine progress indicator there's lots of other statistics that we could be user metrics we could be using to track our progress in fact you say we should be measuring the ecology not not measuring the economy and I'm wondering does anyone do that and how do you do it yeah there's some wonderful metrics of this my favorite one is called the Happy Planet Index which is produced by the New Economics foundation in London and they take two different metrics one is how happy a country is which is calculated by their life expectancy times their life satisfaction over how many resources they use or their their national footprint so it's basically a metric of how effective or how efficient a country is at converting natural resources into human wellbeing so it turns out we are not very good at that and in 2009 the most recent Happy Planet Index out of 140 countries were 114 and Costa Rica was number one I think a lot of people are shaking their head saying Costa Rica why how well Costa Rica has a higher life expectancy a higher level of life satisfaction than we do in the United States and they're using a quarter of the resources to me that's very inspiring because it makes me realize we could be so much more efficient we could waste so much less https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5BcJb3BBz8

    Consumerism → Sustainability
I was able to spend about 20 years traveling around the world looking at literally hundreds of the factories where our stuff is made and the dumpster our stuff is dumped you know from Haiti to South Africa to India it was amazing and what I saw in all my travels was that all of this stuff in our life our electronics our clothing our shoes our appliances our furnitures our cars everything has enormous hidden environmental and social and health impacts before it gets to us and after it leaves us as well as while we do have it and most of those impacts are hidden from view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5BcJb3BBz8

    GDP → Sustainability
the problem with GDP as a metric of success the primary way that we measure our success in progress in this country's GDP and one of my friends who's an ecological economists Dave Becker I interviewed him reset I said what do you think about the GDP and he said is a big dumb number if the GDP is basically it's a measure of how much money changes hands it or how many how much materials changes hands it's not a measure of are we getting happier are we getting healthier is our air getting cleaner our schools getting better it's sort of like if a business listed all the money they spent and all the money they took in and added it together into one big number it gives you no sense of how that business is doing and so if you think about it the GDP what contributes to GDP if you get diagnosed with cancer GDP goes up if you get in a car crash GDP goes up if you spill a bunch of hazardous waste has to be cleaned up GDP goes up if you build because it's putting people to work right well yeah it is putting people to work it's us making money change hands you know sometimes that's people that work sometimes it's just money changing hands but those things are not always good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5BcJb3BBz8
